Welcome to the 2020 “Scyence Fair” organized by The Cyprus Institute on 3rd and 4th April.

“SCYENCE FAIR 2020” is a 2 day-long celebration of research, technology and innovation pioneered by The Cyprus Institute’s 4 research centers, and by young students presenting their scientific explorations.

The public will have the opportunity to visit the facilities and laboratories of The Cyprus Institute, and get acquainted with 4 major areas of research on Energy, Environment and Water Resources, Climate and Atmosphere, Archaeology and Computational Science.

About

The SEMEP international project is coordinated by UNESCO and promotes scientific research and research on environmental issues and studies on technological, economic, social and cultural issues as well as peace and human rights issues. The 11th Student Training Conference is entitled: "Biodiversity of Eucalyptus - Lonely Bees in Cyprus".

As part of Scyence Fair 2020, parents and students will have the opportunity to observe the simulation of the starry sky through the mobile planetarium "Starlab" of the Nicosia Observatory, and to explore distant constellations in the Milky Way and our Solar System. “StarLab” is approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth.

Viken Tavitian Viken Tavitian is a laser physicist, researcher, inventor, patent holder, author, science communicator, science comedian, teacher, projects manager in multidisciplinary scientific and engineering fields and the creator and performer of Vikexploratorium Science & Technology and Vikomedy Shows.
Abstract

The Vikexploratorium Science and Technology is a highly educational and entertaining show. The show is the brainchild of his son Viken Jr. where based on his curiosity in sciences and obsession with the fabulous Mythbusters Discovery Show, in order to further develop his mind. Viken created and developed thousands of highly educational fun and very entertaining experiments and demonstrations in physical sciences and technological applications, that are very much hands-on down to earth and most of all, without a lot of talking. This is a unique show in that combines entertainment and education together (edutainment). The show has been developed in such a way where by using rubbish or unwanted materials of daily life products I turn them into science.

The Vikexploratorium is a highly educational and entertaining science and technology show created and developed by Viken Tavitian. It consists of hands-on approach to complicated science phenomena unveiling them in a fun way through simple experiments. Many laws of physics are not so reachable to young minds when they are being introduced first time. But when they see science phenomena from practical side that leaves a great impression on them for the rest of their lives. The show mostly relates to the physical science phenomena. The idea of these hands-on experiments is to convey that science is all around you and there is nothing to fear of science. The show is approved by the Ministry of Education for Primary and Secondary Departments of Cyprus.

The Show lasts total time 60-75 minutes. In this time 15-25 experiments are performed with full interaction with the students. The audience or students are invited to the stage and the secret of the phenomena are revealed together. The reason the number of experiments vary because of the curiosity of students and the time taken to answer the questions. None of the demonstrations/experiments are dangerous to perform as it is a frequently brought up concern by various institutions/organizations. Several hundred of shows have been performed all over Cyprus in major schools universities institutions and other media platforms.

15:00 - 15:45 Climate Change in the Mediterranean: From the Past…to the Future

George Zittis

Dr. Zittis holds a BSc in Geology and an MSc in Meteorology, Climatology and Atmospheric Environment from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He received his PhD in Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences from The Cyprus Institute in April 2015. In the past he has worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany and at The Cyprus Institute. He currently works as Associate Research Scientist of Climate and Atmosphere Research Center at The Cyprus Institute.


Abstract

Climate change is the most important environmental issue of the last decades. Anthropogenic activities, mainly since the industrial revolution, have significantly contributed to the warming of our planet. Cyprus and the broader Mediterranean region have been affected, since prolonged droughts, heat waves and extreme weather events are already part of our life. In this interactive presentation we will try to understand the drivers behind modern climate change, we will see how the climate of our region has already changed, while we will also present the future climate projections.

Michalis Voniatis

Dr Michalis Voniatis is a Public Health Specialist with a demonstrated track record of working in the hospital and health care industry. He is skilled in Epidemiology, Prevention, Reproductive Health, Global Health, and Healthcare Management. He offered strong professional healthcare services with a Consultants Training in Developing a National Strategic Plan for TB Care and Control focused on Tuberculosis from the World Health Organization.


Abstract

Dr. Michalis Voniatis will focus on the issue of the “Coronavirus” spreading, following the international alarm. The eminent Cypriot Epidemiologist will answer questions such as: How much should we worry? What are the first symptoms? What are the appropriate preventive measures? How the World Health Organization will proceed?

17:00 - 19:00 1st "TeachMeetCY" Meeting

A "TeachMeet" is an organised but informal meeting (in the style of an unconference) for teachers to share good practice, practical innovations and personal insights in teaching. Participants volunteer to demonstrate good practice they've delivered over the past year, or discuss a product that enhances classroom practice. “TeachMeet” events are open to all and do not charge an entry fee.


Abstract

The topic of the Meeting is "Exploiting the Learning Project: Organizing, Implementing, Evaluating, Learning Benefits". The participants will share their experiences on the “Project Learning” approach. The exchange of experiences/opinion will help teachers to enrich their knowledge of the subject, which is also part of the new student evaluation system. Teachers of all levels and specialties can attend the meeting.

The Cyprus Mathematical Society

The Cyprus Mathematical Society (CY.M.S.) is a non-for-profit organization established in Cyprus since 1983. The Cyprus Math Society is manager and developed by volunteering work of its members. Its purposes are to promote Mathematics Education and Science.

It’s a member of the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and a founding member of the Mathematical Society of South Easter Europe (MASSEE).


Abstract

The Cyprus Mathematical Society (CY.M.S.) is organizing a journalistic article competition on philosophical reflection and expression of ideas on the topic: "The Role of Mathematics in Medicine". The competition is under the auspices of the Director of Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth.

The article will be an exploratory / proof type and it is expected that the participants will refer to the role of Mathematics in Medicine and present documented placements for this purpose. Pupils of the Secondary and Secondary Education of Public and Private Schools of Cyprus are eligible to participate in the Competition.

FameLab Cyprus

FameLab Cyprus 2020 is organized for the 10th consecutive year by the British Council and the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), which also acts as the main sponsor of the event, in collaboration with SciCo Cyprus. Since 2011, the competition has offered opportunities to many young and talented scientists.

Individuals over 18 years old who are working, studying or graduating in fields such as technology, engineering, medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, etc. are eligible to participate. FameLab also provides opportunities for collaboration and networking with other scientists in Europe and Cyprus, as well as opportunities to participate in British Council events in Cyprus and abroad.

The qualifying round will take place on Saturday, 4 April during the sCYence Fair. Participants will have three minutes to present a scientific topic of their choice in a fun and comprehensible way to the general public. The jury will then select the ten finalists who will go to the grand final. The ten finalists, will attend a free two-day Masterclass in Science Communication from experts in Cyprus Communication, preparing them for the national final. All events are open to the public.

The grand final will take place on Wednesday, 13 May, at the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation’s premises in Nicosia. The winner of the final, will be awarded a cash prize of 1000 euros and travel to the Cheltenham Festival in Britain in June with all expenses covered, to compete the rest of the other countries’ winners in the International FameLab 2020. The two runner ups of the national final, will also be awarded cash prizes; 500 euro and 250 euro respectively.

FameLab© is a registered trademark of the Cheltenham Festival, one of the UK's most renowned cultural organizations, which hosts four of the country's leading jazz, literature, music and science festivals. Created in 2005 at the Cheltenham Science Festival and following the great success of competition in Britain, in collaboration with the British Council, it began traveling around the world, first pressing for Southeast Europe and then for the rest of Europe, Asia, Oceania, the Africa and America. The competition is currently being held in more than 30 countries.

Gregory Makridis

Professor Gregory A. Makridis is a Mathematician and holds a Ph.D. He is the President of the Cyprus Mathematical Society, the President of the THALES Foundation, the President of the European Association of ERASMUS Coordinators, and the President of the European Association of Career Guidance.


Abstract

The education systems in most countries today are placing at the stage of Education 2.0 and very few countries are making reforms that are characterized by Education 3.0 parameters. This presentation will discuss the characteristics of education from stage 1.0 to stage 4.0 and the vision of the future reforming of schools. Reference will also be made to actions through European Programs related to the evolution of Education.
